Our Work

The ASSF is heavily involved in many aspects of fishery work and to this end has official contacts with many organisations. The ASSF is also an active member of a number of Scottish based groups that play a major role in promoting angling. The main organisations and groups that the ASSF are involved with are listed below.

Fisheries Management Industry Focus Group (Lantra)

The ASSF was one of the main driving forces in setting up this important group, which is fully recognised by all major organisations and government departments. The role of the group is to identify and promote training needs, at all levels, in the fisheries industry throughout Scotland. Lantra is the Sector Skills Council for the enviromental and land based industry sector throughout the UK.

Angling Tourism Development Group.

This is a group that has been set up to promote the marketing of angling in Scotland and abroad. The group covers all sectors of the angling industry in Scotland and is fully recognised by the Scottish Executive, VisitScotland and other organisations. The ASSF plays
a highly active role in this group and is particularly involved in promoting rainbow trout fishing. This is especially so now that official reports have shown that it is second only to salmon angling in its contribution to the Scottish economy and is the single most popular type of game angling.

Fisheries Management Steering Group

This group, of which the ASSF is a member, has been set up by the Scottish Executive to develop ideas on the best ways to run freshwater fisheries in Scotland. It is likely that there will be an opportunity to look at and change freshwater fisheries legislation in 2006/7 and this is the chance for the ASSF to make sure that the needs and interests of commercial fisheries in Scotland are clearly heard.

Consultations.

The ASSF is regularly invited by the Scottish Executive, government bodies and other organisations to supply comments on official consultation papers. Also the ASSF writes directly to organisations etc when members raise major matters of concern. A selection of responses and letters are available below.
