Bangour Trout FisheryBangour Reservoir Dechmont West Lothian |
The Fishery. |
Bangour Trout Fishery is situated in the south-east part of Bathgate Hills, near the small village of Dechmont, surrounded by picturesque woodland and high farmland. Bangour reservoir was originally built in 1902 as a water supply for Bangour hospital and was stocked with brown trout to keep the water pure. The reservoir is 700 feet above sea level and originally held 16 million gallons. When the hospital closed the reservoir was syndicated until the syndicate broke up and the place was left to the vandals who dumped rubbish and burnt down the old boathouse. The reservoir was leased to the former fishery staff who cleaned the place up and built the original platforms and walkways and erected two portacabins where they operated until 2005 when the current owner bought the place and started putting in the facilities that are in place today. |
The reservoir totals 12.5 acres of which around 7 acres are netted off and kept weed free. The reservoir has a good head of fish which includes wild brown trout which breed freely at the autumn. There are a number of large carp which were introduced in 1964 at around 1 1/2 ib which are now in the high twenties and can be seen cruising in the summer months. The reservoir is stocked weekly with rainbows,(minimum stock size 2lb) blues, goldens and tigers.
